Coaching – is it just a trend or not?!

03 May, 2022

In formal terms, Coaching “is a process of human learning and development (an evolutionary process of reflection-action) that aims to help people achieve goals, transporting them from where they are (current stage) to where they want to be (desired stage), based on their own skills and during which they discover and implement their own solutions. Its essence is based on the assumption that people contain in themselves the ability to overcome their difficulties, to find their own answers and solutions and thus build their own path” (available at Portuguese Society of Professional Coaching).

Coaching is not a therapy, nor is the Coach a therapist. The process is more focused on the pursuit of specific tasks and goals, a process of personal transformation and change. During the process, the client (Coachee) is encouraged to become aware of their starting point and reflect on their desired future, evaluate alternatives and find solutions, consider options and implement actions with a view to achieving that future (Portuguese Society of Professional Coaching).

The Coach’s role is not to teach his Coachees, it is much more of an attentive observer and an excellent listener, ready to provide a different and alternative view of certain less positive aspects that may affect daily life, seeking to turn them into something more positive and ultimately more productive.

As a matter of curiosity, the word coach appeared in England in the mid-16th century, but its origin is Hungarian. At that time, the village of Kocs developed a model of wagon that used steel springs in its suspension, which made the vehicle much more comfortable than the others. Soon, it became a hit and everyone wanted to buy it. The carriages came to be known as kocsi szeker and the citizens who produced them as kocsi. To the English, the word sounded like coach, so it came to be used to refer to this vehicle drivers.

The term, as we know it today, only began to be referred to in the mid-19th century, at the University of Oxford. At that time, students often referred to their tutors as being the main responsible for their good performance in tests and exams, that is, they were the professionals who guided them along the best path. This is how the word coach came to be used to define people who, like the coachman’s, take others from one place to another more quickly and safely. The difference is that, in the case of the coach, the displacement is not geographical, but relative to the individual’s personal and professional development.

In the end, Coaching has a lot to do with change. Professionally or personally, we are subject to constant variables and, in order to face, accept and deal with them, the Coach offers the person a different perspective, showing change as something natural and that can be overcome or worked on.

There are 6 guiding assumptions:

– The future is not the same as the past;

– There is no failure, only result;

– It is always possible to do better;

– The resources that people need are within their own;

– The Coachee does not have problems, but solutions that have not yet been found;

– For people to develop they have to ACT.

There are several types of coaching – life coaching, executive coaching, teams coaching, business coaching, sports coaching, wellness coaching, family coaching, educational coaching.
